Durbanville arose round the best water-source for dozens of kilometres, which drew half of all travellers in the Cape, and when, around the turn of the eighteenth century, the important routes were laid down, they went by way of the Spring which, even at the height of summer, poured out thousands of gallons of sweet water a day (and, in fact, served the village of Durbanville as its water supply until 1958).

The site of the village itself (today's central area) was set aside for public use at some stage in the first forty years of the settlement at De Kaap, after which the Company continually refrained from granting farm land around the Spring.
